Most doctors still keep track of patient information on three-by-five index cards and paper charts supplied by nurses. Enter PatientKeeper, brainchild of two Massachusetts Institute of Technology professors. PatientKeeper's software synchs different computer systems within a hospital, allowing physicians to access test results and write prescriptions in real time via any portable Web device.

When Mercy Medical Center decided to require e-signing and computerized documentation, the hospital discovered its physicians were unhappy with the current health information system. The hospital implemented a single sign-on physician portal with the assistance of a dedicated physician advisory group. The portal is Web- and mobile-device-accessible, interfaces with existing systems and is used by nearby competitive hospitals. Electronic signatures for transcriptions and orders have achieved full adoption since the portal’s inception.

PatientKeeper Enhances Patient Care at Berger Health System

For the past several months, Ohio-based community hospital Berger Health System has been working its physicians to enable them to use PatientKeeper Physician Portal, a Web-based application that gives physicians remote access to Berger patient information. The system provides an innovative solution for physicians to have a unified view of patient information including lab and imaging results, medications, allergies, information from hospital records and ER visits, that they can access from any computer, inside or outside the hospital.

PatientKeeper’s applications help physicians work more efficiently and practice better medicine, but they also unlock the value of existing hospital systems whose physician usage is less than optimal. We spoke to Paul Brient, president and CEO of PatientKeeper.

Greater Ocala Health Information Trust, Inc. (dba Healthy Ocala and Greater Marion County) has signed contracts with two information technology vendors and has selected a third partner.
The RHIO has selected PatientKeeper as its “integration foundation and physician portal” for Health Information Exchange as part of its effort to serve the needs of patients, physicians and the greater Ocala (Florida) region.

The Greater Ocala Health Information Trust has partnered with two vendors—PatientKeeper and WorldDoc—in preparation for the Florida-based health information exchange's rollout this fall. The HIE, which is also known as Healthy Ocala and Greater Marion County, includes several local hospitals, the Marion County Medical Society, the local chamber of commerce, and community organizations. It has also chosen an EHR provider, but won't yet say who.

Lately, I've noticed an increasing number of resumes which mention the product PatientKeeper on them, and I became more curious about the vendor and its product offerings. So, I started to ask around and found one customer--nearly in my own backyard--which was not only using the product, but singing its praises. That organization is Berkshire Health Systems (BHS), based in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. I called a consultant I knew working at BHS to ask a few questions and she was kind enough to set up a conference call for me with the organization's Chief Information Officer (CIO) and Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO).

Faced with an expensive overhaul, an Iowa system turns to an unproven vendor to win physician adoption.
Jeff Cash faced a difficult task when he became vice president and chief information officer at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids, IA. The health system, which staffs about 350 beds and has approximately 70 affiliated physicians, had been running an information system from MediTech for more than a decade. Although the system handled financial transactions well, it was challenging to use and had limited clinical reporting capabilities. Because Mercy wanted to expand its use of clinical IT, it rebuilt the legacy system, updating how data was organized and adding a nursing documentation component. "The goal was to bring nursing documentation online and have an inter-disciplinary care plan available."
